Things To Do
Restaurants
New Orleans is known for its amazing food! Here are a few of our favorite restaurants:
Lil’ Dizzy’s Cafe - 1500 Esplanade Ave
Casual Black-owned lunch spot. Kennedy recommends the gumbo, fried chicken, and mac and cheese.
Mais Arepas - 1200 Carondolet Ave
One of Titus’ favorite New Orleans restaurants. We recommend the brochetas and the grilled chicken arepa.
Dooky Chase - 2301 Orleans Ave
Iconic Black-owned restaurant. Great for a fancier lunch with all the New Orleans favorites. Reservations recommended.
Barracuda Taco Stand - 3984 Tchoupitoulas St.
Our favorite taco stand, with a great patio, tacos, and margaritas. Titus gets the chicken deluxe taco and Kennedy gets the catfish taco.
Turkey and the Wolf - 739 Jackson Ave
Quirky sandwich shop. We recommend the collard green melt and the fried bologna sandwich.
Blue Oak BBQ - 900 N Carrollton Ave
BBQ spot near city park. Our favorite dishes are the fried chicken sandwich and the smoked chicken wings.
Cafe Sbisa - 1011 Decatur St
Black-owned fine dining in the French Quarter. Kennedy loves the Trout Eugene and the Courtbouillion.
Activities
There is lots to do and see in New Orleans, in between mealtimes! Here is a small sampling of what the city has to offer:
French Quarter Festival - April 10-13th
This free festival celebrates Louisiana musicians with over 20 stages all throughout the city. Of all of New Orleans festivals (and there are a lot!!), French Quarter Fest is Kennedy’s favorite! Check out the music lineup here. The food at French Quarter Fest is also great and a nice way to sample the city’s offerings. Take a look at who will be cooking that weekend!
City Park - 1 Collins Diboll Circle
City Park is Kennedy’s favorite place in New Orleans, and the site of our wedding! While you’ll see the Botanical Gardens for our ceremony and reception, there is so much else to explore in the park and a great way to spend an afternoon. Rent paddleboats, wander through the oak trees, visit the free sculpture garden, or the New Orleans Museum of Art. You can also play miniature golf…Titus is the reigning champ at City Putt and won’t let Kennedy forget it! And if you’re craving a beignet, there is a Cafe Du Monde inside of City Park with much shorter lines than the French Quarter location!
Studio Be - 2941 Royal Street
An art gallery and immersive experience showcasing the work of artis Brandan “BMike” Odums…and the site of our 3rd date!
Swamp Tour
There are several great options for swamp tours, we recommend one with an airboat to see some alligators! We enjoyed Ultimate Swamp Adventures.
Explore New Orleans Neighborhoods
One of Kennedy’s favorite ways to spend a day in New Orleans is to explore its many different neighborhoods!
Magazine Street - Miles and miles of local boutiques, restaurants, art galleries, etc. Our first date started on Magazine Street with brunch at Apolline and browsing Peaches Record Store!
Bywater/Marigny - Grab some of the best beignets in the city at Loretta’s pralines, visit Studio Be or JamNola, and get a meal at St. Roch Market, Morrow’s or Satsuma Cafe.
Garden District - Catch the St. Charles streetcar line to the Garden District and check out the beautiful homes and oak trees. Do a self-guided walking tour like this one, and grab a meal at one of New Orleans most iconic restaurants, Commander’s Palace.
French Quarter - New Orleans most iconic neighborhood! Since our wedding weekend is during French Quarter fest, the Quarter will be filled with even more music, food, and people than usual! Walk down Royal Street to see lots of art galleries and antique shops. Venture down Bourbon Street to get a hand grenade from Tropical Isle and a Hurricane from Pat O’Brien’s. Brave the line for Cafe Du Monde’s beignets, or get some less crowded beignets at Loretta’s Pralines location in the French Market or Cafe Beignet.
Churches
We are getting married on Palm Sunday, and there are plenty of places to get the word before our ceremony! Here are a couple of suggestions:
St. Louis Cathedral - 615 Pere Antoine Alley
Attend mass at New Orleans signature landmark, the St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square in the heart of the French Quarter. Sunday Mass is at 9 and 11 am
New Home Ministries - 1616 Carondolet Ave
While living in New Orleans, Kennedy attended New Home Ministries. Services at the Uptown location start at 10:30 am.
Nightlife
If you don’t get enough music during the day at French Quarter Fest, there are plenty of places to go at night!
Bacchanal Wine Bar - 600 Poland Ave
One of Kennedy’s favorite New Orleans spots! Grab a bottle of wine and some cheeses and let the Bacchanal team make a cheese plate for you. Then head out to the backyard to listen to live jazz.
Frenchman Street
A street full of live music venues, bars, and nightclubs. Some of our favorite spots are The Maison and 30/90. But just pop in wherever you hear good music!
